Fix a blocked workflow

Read the validation issues on a blocked workflow and resolve them.

Updated 2026-07-23

Contrata checks a workflow before letting it run. While you're editing, the badge in the top bar reads Blocked until you fix it; on the Workflows list, the same workflow shows as Inactive in the Status column.

Read the validation issues

  1. Open the blocked workflow. A Workflow is blocked banner appears at the top, with a Validation issues list beneath it.
  2. Each issue names the step it affects and describes what's wrong.
  3. Select an issue to focus that step on the canvas.
NoteThe validation badge in the top bar reads Blocked or Ready to use, so you can check a workflow's state at a glance without opening the issues list.

Fix and recheck

  1. Select Edit if you haven't already — issues can only be resolved while editing.
  2. Work through each issue: fill in a missing field, connect a step that shows Not connected, or complete a step's required settings.
  3. Select Recheck to run validation again.
  4. Once the banner clears and the badge reads Ready to use, you can switch the Active toggle on — see Activate and pause a workflow.
TipCommon causes are a step that shows Not connected, a Human review step that's missing a required setting, or a trigger that hasn't been fully configured.

Common questions

Can I fix issues without selecting Edit first?

No. Contrata only lets you change a workflow's steps and settings — and therefore resolve validation issues — while it's in edit mode.

Why does the banner wording change?

It matches what you can do next — asking you to select Edit first if you're viewing the workflow, or to run Validate if you're already editing it.
