Activate and pause a workflow

Switch a workflow on so it can run, or pause it without deleting it.

A workflow only runs jobs while it's Active. You can pause it at any time, and its setup stays exactly as you left it.

Activate a workflow

  1. Open the workflow and select Edit.
  2. Select Validate. The workflow must show Ready to use before it can be switched on — see Fix a blocked workflow if it comes back Blocked.
  3. Select the Active toggle in the top bar to switch it on.
  4. Select Save Changes.
NoteThe Active toggle is disabled while a workflow is Blocked. Validate it first, or the toggle stays greyed out with a reminder to do so.

Pause a workflow

  1. Open the workflow and select Edit.
  2. Select the Active toggle to switch it off — its status changes to Paused.
  3. Select Save Changes.

A paused workflow keeps its trigger, agents, stages, and captured data settings, and ignores any triggers until you reactivate it. This is a safer alternative to deleting a workflow you might need again.

TipCheck the Status column on the Workflows list at a glance to see which workflows are Active, Draft, Paused, or Inactive (a workflow that hasn't passed validation).

Common questions

What's the difference between Draft and Paused?

Draft means the workflow has never been activated. Paused means it was active and has since been switched off.

Do I need to validate a paused workflow again before reactivating it?

Only if you've changed it since pausing. An unchanged workflow keeps its Ready to use status, so you can switch it back on directly.
